It was such a relief to strip off those heavy shoes. Amazing how such a small thing could end up weighing so much given enough time and distance. As he flexed his toes against the cool ground a soft exuberance began to radiate through his body. There was never more than maybe a half inch of rubber between him and the earth and yet somehow, that made all the difference. He winced as the small rocks bit into his unprotected feet, and wondered how long it would take before he didn’t notice them. Even now it seemed a small price to pay to feel the air and grass, rather than the stifling negation of the shoes. He even seemed to stand straighter, perhaps because his feet could finally root as they were designed to or maybe just because the newness made him suddenly self-conscious of the rest of his body. Either way, for now he was content to stand there and enjoy the simple sensations of being alive
